Corene Walton -WARNER ROBINS - Corene (Wilkes) Walton of Warner Robins, Georgia, was born March 11, 1918 in Laurens County, Georgia, and after a long illness, passed away Saturday, October 15, 2011 in Atlanta, Georgia. Corene was preceded in death by her husband of forty-four years, Rufus Walton, and six siblings including her twin sister, Irene. She is survived by her sister, Sally Wilkes Shuman of Baxley, Georgia and twelve nieces and nephews in Georgia, Ohio and Texas.
Corene's early years in Laurens County involved getting an education, helping out at home with the younger siblings, and helping with the gardening. She was also athletic and loved involvement in sports. Corene, her older sister, Edith, and her twin Irene were starters on her high school basketball team.
Corene was a graduate of the Georgia State College for Women (since renamed Georgia State College and University), and subsequently earned her teaching certificate during summers while teaching. She taught the fourth grade at RW Lindsey Elementary School in Warner Robins for more than thirty years before retiring, and then enjoyed a second career substitute teaching in Houston County for eight years. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Warner Robins for many years, and hosted the Wilkes family's annual Christmas Reunion for more than twenty years.
As her health declined, Corene moved to Atlanta eleven years ago to be near her sisters Irene and Elizabeth. The family is especially grateful for the continuing support from her church home in Warner Robins, especially the love and support of the TLC Group who continued to communicate with her to the end of her life.
Graveside services will be held Sunday, October 23, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. in Magnolia Park Cemetery in Warner Robins.
