    • Duane E. Dopler
      (January 29, 1920 - January 15, 2009)

      U.S. VeteranMr. Duane E. Dopler, 88, of Lake City, died Thursday afternoon, January 15, 2009, in the North Florida Regional Hospital in Gainesville, following a brief illness. A native of Rivers Junction, Michigan, Mr. Dopler was raised in Lake Wales, Florida and moved to Columbia County in 1940. He was a member of the Columbia High School Class of 1941 and was still active with his class reunions. After graduation he joined and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. When he returned from the war Mr. Dopler farmed and worked for Metal Products for many years. After leaving Metal Products he went to work with the Florida Department of Transportation and worked as a park ranger until retiring in 1982. Mr. Dopler was very active following his retirement. He spent his time attending auctions and visiting yard sales purchasing old furniture and tools that he ultimately refinished and re-sold. He was an avid fisherman, loved to work in his garden and especially enjoyed the work he did with his church. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints 3rd Ward. Mr. Dopler was preceded in death in 2006 by his wife of sixty-five years, Merlean Douberley Dopler.

      Mr. Dopler is survived by his son, Linden E. "Buddy" Dopler of Lake City.

      Funeral services for Mr. Dopler will be conducted at Noon on Monday, January 19, 2009 in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Old Country Club Road) with Bishop David Morse conducting. Interment will follow in the Ebenezer Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the church.
