"Maude" was the youngest child of Florida Sweat and Silas Thompson. Her given name was Helen Bertie Thompson but she was called Maude, to honor her mother's friend Maude Wingate. She was barely 2 1/2 years old when her father died leaving his widow with several small children during the Great Depression. Although her mother did the best she could, Maude's childhood was not easy. She sang gossip songs with a group as a teenager.
Maude married Earl Register and had one daughter and three sons, 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was a homemaker and a wonderful cook specializing in game and frying fish.
She was the last of the Thompson siblings to die and as a long-time smoker, died from lung cancer.
