    • Larry Herman Wilkes, Sr. -DUBLIN

      After a long and valiant battle against cancer, Larry Herman Wilkes, Sr. died on Tuesday, December 21 with his family by his side.

      Services for Mr. Wilkes will be held on Friday, December 24th at 11A.M. in the chapel of Jefferson Street Baptist Church, Dublin. Burial will follow at Northview Cemetery. Rev. David J. Currie will officiate.

      Mr. Wilkes was born November 19, 1921 in Stillmore, Georgia to William McKinley Wilkes and Lora Strange Wilkes, residing in Dublin since 1946. He is retired from Warner Robins Air Force Base. He was an active member of Jefferson Street Baptist Church where he attended the L.B. Roberts Sunday school Class and was a member of the Cane & Able Choir.

      Mr. Wilkes served in the Salvation Army since it began in Laurens County in 1993. His volunteer services include working with Emergency Disaster Relief during hurricanes Charlie, Fran, and Katrina and the 2003 tornado in Camilla, Georgia. He also participated in the Christmas Bell Ringing Ministry for many years.

      Mr. Wilkes was Assistant Leader in the Civilian Conservation Corps on Hunting Island, South Carolina in 1938. During the Great Depression, the CCC was a public work relief program for unemployed men age 18-25, proposed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, providing manual labor related to the conservation and development of natural resources in rural areas of the United States from 1933 to 1942.

      Mr. Wilkes was a WWII Veteran serving in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946 in the North Atlantic and European Theatre. He was stationed on the battleship The Joseph L. Chamberlain during the Battle of the Bulge. In 1945, he served in the Pacific in the liberation of the Philippine Islands and Okinawa. He was stationed on the SS Ewing Young, near Sipan, when the Japanese surrendered.

      Mr. Wilkes has been a member of Laurens Lodge #75 F.&A.M. for 58 years - Worshipful Master 1967 and 2004, High Priest 1970 Harmony Chapter (now Middle Georgia Chapter #165), Illustrious Master 1976 Dublin Chapter #12 Royal and Select Masons, Eminent Commander 1974 Olivet Commandery #27 Knights Templar. He is a recipient of the Knight of York Cross of Honor Georgia Priory #39, Middle Georgia York Rite College #201, Worthy Patron 11 times Dublin Chapter #175 Order of the Eastern Star, an Al Sihah Shrine Macon, Georgia, and former member A.A.S.R. Valley of Macon.

      Mr. Wilkes was predeceased by his brother, Charles Mervin Wilkes, Dublin. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Claire Smith Wilkes; children, Brenda Harriss (George) of Wilmington, NC, Larry Herman Wilkes, Jr. (Donna) of Dublin, Doyce Smith of Soperton, Lydia Evans (Brent) of Macon, and Amelia Woods of Dublin; grandchildren, Lawrence Wolfe, Jr. (Angela N.), Elizabeth Hester (Sandy), and John Harriss of Wilmington, NC, Dr. Lauri Bullen (Jason) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Matthew Wilkes (Robbie) of Statesboro, Justin Smith (Nicole) of Rockledge, Jenna Claire Riddle (Tyler) of Tifton, Rhett Evans of Auburn, AL, Tara Evans of Atlanta, Roxanne Shirley (Justin) of Dublin, Benjamin Woods, and Joshua Woods of Dublin; great grandchildren, Anna Wolfe, Melody Wolfe, Danielle Nichols, Caleb Swinson, and Mary Elizabeth Hester of Wilmington, NC; Zane Shirley, Hudson Shirley, and Carson Smith of Dublin; brothers, Rewel Wilkes and Grady Wilkes (Patricia) of Dublin, Eugene Wilkes (Shelba) of Swainsboro; sisters, Nyla Fennell of Dublin, Hazel McNutt (David) of Grovetown, and Nellie Blalock (Charles) of Midville.

      Pallbearers are Lawrence Wolfe, Jr. John Harriss, Matthew Wilkes, Justin Smith, Rhett Evans, Benjamin Woods, Joshua Woods, and Brent Evans. Honorary Pallbearers are the members of Masonic Lodge #75 and the L.B. Roberts Sunday school Class of Jefferson Street Baptist Church.

      Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 23rd from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.

      The family of Mr. Wilkes would like to express their deep appreciation to the caregivers of Hospice of Laurens County.
