  • Notes
    • Thomas had the occasion to change the spelling of his name from "Deadman" to "Deadmond". He signed many documents, Thomas Deadmond, and some as Thomas Deadman. Evidently he did this so as not to get him confused with other Thomas Deadman's in the area! He had received some "Tax Liens" for another Thomas Deadman and was almost arrested with a "Paulpers Warrant" !

Thomas Deadman, born 1784 in North Carolina. He changed the spelling of his name from Deadman to Deadmond. He migrated to Virginia and married Elizabeth Milliron in Bedford County, Virginia He had several children born in Orange County, North Carolina and at lease one born in Bedford County, Virginia. Thomas migrated to Marion County, Illinois by covered wagon in 1827 and died there in 1851. Thomas and Elizabeth settled in Marion County, Illinois and their many descendents branched off in all directions.

*1809 - From Bedford Co., VA Marriage On-Line:
Thomas Deadmons & Elizabeth Millirons, d/o of Henry & Catharener Millirons. Valentine Leftwich, Surety. Married by John Ayers 6/1/1809. Marriage bond dated 5/27/1809.

*1827 - From History of Marion & Clinton Cos, Ill (1881): (pg 46 & pg 246) Thomas Deadmond, a Virginian, was the first settler in what is now Odin township. He arrived in 1827 by "Wagon Train". Had 10 children. See complete article in possession of writer.

*1827 - From Deadmond Genealogy submitted by Mary K. Lyons to Footprints of Marion Co., IL, Vol. 4 (or H), No. 3:
Thomas Deadmond and his family lived in Bedford Co., VA, Orange Co., NC and "Middle Tennessee" before coming to Marion Co., IL in 1827. One of his daughters, Denishah Hayes, told in her later days of "walking behind the wagon from Tennessee to Illinois."

*1827 - From Brinkerhoff's History of Marion Co: Cold weather caught them off guard in 1827 and they built a lean to to spend the winter in. The Deadmond Cemetery is now located on part of this land and 152 years later some of the ffth and sixth generations of the family still live there. It is said the first person to be buried in the Deadmond Cemetery was "an Indian who rode through on horseback and became sick. Thomas took him in and nursed him but he died and was buried under an old oak tree near the north fence."
Had we known Thomas Deadmond, I do believe we would have found him a busy man. It is said that he ran a trading post and was a Justice of the Peace. In the Deadmond Family Bible (now in the possession of Riley Deadmond), we find the births and deaths of the family.

*1827 - From Marion Co. Sesquicentennial Book 1823-1973:
Thomas Deadmond, a Virginian, was Odin township's first settler. He arrived in the southern part in 1827. The season was well advanced. He erected a shed-home with the roof slanting toward the north and south wall left open. A log fire afforded warmth and a cooking area. Mr. Deadmond entered eighty acres in Section 28 in January 1837.
