Death	Maude Alma Harris Cleland, 90, of Nahunta passed away Saturday (23 Jun 2001) at the Bayview Nursing Home. The death of Mrs. Maude or Granny Cleland as she was affectionately known, brings personal sorrow to her sons, their families and a host of other surviving relatives and friends. The matriarch of the local Cleland family, she was born August 17, 1910 in old Wayne County before Brantley was established. She was a daughter of the late Noah Thomas Harris and Clifford Amanda Highsmith Harris and was descended from a multitude of early pioneer settlers including the Harris', Highsmith's, Harrell's, Wainright's and Robinson's. She was the widow of W. A. Cleland Jr., a local carpenter and builder, who preceded her in death on August 17, 1959. She was also preceded in death by a son, Wannis L. Cleland, who died on March 13, 1987, a sister, Solena Harris Steedley and two brothers, Ira Conrade Harris and William Brantley "Bill" Harris. She was a member of Ivory Palace Church. Survivors include three sons, their wives and families, Thomas Earl and Sylvia Boren Cleland, Jacksonville, FL, Johnnie F. and Marleen Highsmith Cleland and Donald E. and Wanda Turner Cleland, Nahunta; five granddaughters, Kathy Holt, Tammy Crews, Karen Gray, Paula Ham and Amy Lyons; eight grandsons, Thomas Earl (Tommy) Cleland Jr., Anthony (Tony) Cleland, Timmy Cleland, Travis Cleland, Mark W. Cleland, Jamie Cleland and Robbie Cleland; a number of great grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Mae Harris Steedley, Nahunta, and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 26, from her church, the Ivory Palace Church, with the Rev. Hugh D. Arnold officiating. Interment followed in the Smyrna Cemetery in the Lulaton Community. Casketbearers were her nephews, J.W.Harris, George "Buddy" Steedley, Harry DePratter, Alton DePratter, Charlie Cleland, Virgil Dixon, Dale Lee and Guendell Lee. Chambless Funeral Home of Nahunta was in charge of arrangements.
